How to Keep Your Espresso Machine Clean

May 25, 2020

Cleaning your home coffee equipment can be a difficult process!

This week we wanted to give some helpful tips on how you can keep your espresso machine sparkling clean so you can always get the best taste from your lattes and espresso shots!

Rinse Everything After Use

This will be one of the best things you can do to keep your espresso machine sparkling! Make sure after every use to rinse all easily-accessible parts with water and remove any excess grinds. If your machine has an attached steamer for frothing milk, wiping that down immediately after use will ensure that milk residue comes off easily. And make sure to run the steamer for a few seconds after wiping it down to get rid of any leftover milk, as milk buildup in the steam pipe can damage the steamer over time. Wiping the machine down with a wet towel will also help remove dust build-up! If you follow at least this step you’ll keep your machine looking great, and your coffee tasting amazing.

Come Up With A Once A Week Cleaning Routine

Our recommendation is to get into a deep cleaning routine at least once a week. Espresso machines usually have quite a few components, so disassembling the machine and making sure to remove all dirt and grime is important because residue can build up extremely fast!

Use A Brush!

When cleaning your machine, using a brush is a really great idea. The bristles will help you get into all the hard to reach places and will help you be more thorough. A “group head brush” with a solid 90-degree angle would be our top recommendation, but you could also get creative and use something like a small unused paintbrush, or an old toothbrush!

Vinegar Can Be Your Best Friend

Either white or distilled vinegar can be a fantastic resource when cleaning your coffee equipment like your espresso machine. Oftentimes, minerals can build up from brewing with hard water. To help fight the build-up, add a few ounces of vinegar to around 20 ounces of water and let it run through the machine. After this, run distilled water through the machine a few times and things will quickly be good as new! Don’t forget to run the water, as otherwise your coffee will have a new, more vinegary taste.

Cleaning your machine every so often isn’t that hard to do, and the benefits will really help you make sure that you are getting the best cup every time! Reach out to us on social media and let us know your tips for cleaning your espresso machine!
